Job Description: This scholarship is funded by a bequest from Professor G C Henderson to promote and encourage research into the history of the Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian communities. This scholarship is open to full-time postgraduate research candidates intending to enrol in the Departments of Anthropology, Archaeology or History at the University of Sydney. The tenure and benefits of the scholarship are similar to that of the UPA.

Amount awarded:

The scholarship is valued at the APA rate ($22,500 pa in 2010).
The scholarship was established in 1973 after a bequest from Professor G.C. Henderson who died in 1944. Professor Henderson was the Professor of Modern History in the University of Adelaide from 1902 to 1924 and was given the title Professor Emeritus in 1923. He was a graduate of the University of Sydney and held one of the University’s travelling scholarships. In 1935 he was appointed Acting Lecturer in History in the University and from 1937 until the time of his death he was Research Professor in History. He had a particular interest in the history of the South Sea Islands.

The scholarship is awarded under the following general conditions:

1. The award shall be made subject to availability of funds and only one award shall be made at any one time.
2. The scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and appropriateness of the proposed program of research to the department concerned.
3. The scholarships shall be tenable for up to two years for a Masters degree and up to three years for a PhD degree, subject to satisfactory progress. In exceptional circumstances, a further extension of six months may be granted to PhD candidates. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the award will be deducted from the maximum period of tenure.
4. The scholarships shall have the same stipend as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA).*
